Avoiding Online Data Entry Scams

by WorkFromHome on July 19, 2011

One of the most popular work from home jobs available today is online data entry. Responsible for inputting transcribed data quickly and efficiently, these jobs are very popular among those looking to work from home. If you know where to look for work and red flags to watch out for, you can gain many reputable high-paying data entry clients that can provide you with consistent work and projects indefinitely.

Data entry jobs, like online surveys, are very competitive job markets. These companies pay quickly for completed work and require little to no specialised skills, which makes it a highly competitive industry. Scam artists know this and prey upon needy individuals by tempting them with irresistible offers, stories that tug at the heartstrings, and attempt to gain the loyal trust, and money, of those desperate individuals in need of immediate work projects.

  1. Never pay to work from home as a data entry specialist. Legitimate job companies are eager to pay you, not the other way around. No matter how tempting the offer sounds, if it accompanies a request for your money, it is always a scam. It can be disguised as a processing, administrative, finder’s, managerial, placement, one-time, or user fee.
  2. Beware of companies that ask for your bank account or financial information. An authentic data entry company typically pays by check or online payment service. They may gather important information such as your name, address, telephone number, and the e-mail address associated with the online payment service, but will never directly ask you for your password or financial information.
  3. A legitimate data entry company will always have one or more points of contact when you need to reach out to someone to ask a question or get help. It is usually an e-mail address or mailing address. Sometimes a data entry company will also provide a phone number. Always test the information provided to prove its legitimacy. If the e-mail you attempt to send comes back to you as undeliverable, chances are good that the company is not reputable. Scammers do not want you to contact them, so more often than not, they will not include any type of contact information on their website.
  4. A scam artist may go to great lengths to create elaborately-designed websites with catchy sales slogans, stories of hardship, and other bogus information to tempt you to “sign up” with them. On the flip side, other scammers may throw their websites up in minutes, and it usually shows. These types of websites can be full of grammatical errors, sentence fragments, and poor ad copy, if any.
  5. Any website that makes outrageous claims as to your earning potential is a sure sign of a scam. You will not get rich by performing data entry tasks. You will earn a decent hourly wage by working for legitimate data entry companies, but you will not earn tons of money each day or week. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Data entry jobs are hard to come by. When you do find one, you need to act fast and apply right away. If a company is promising you a job and an enormous sum of money, use your best judgment and run the other way.

Finding online data entry jobs can be tricky. There are several resources that can help you find legitimate openings, but you have to check these sites daily; checking them throughout the day will yield better results in your job search.

Online work from home forums are the best place to find legitimate data entry jobs. Successful home business professionals and those that are new to the industry contribute questions, answers, post job leads, warn others of scams, and unite to help each other maximise their income. There are hundreds of new threads posted each day and chances are good that you will find a data entry job by searching the site. Some forums require users to sign up in order to view or contribute to the threads. Signing up is always free and fast. Others allow guests to peruse the forum in search of vital information.

Online job boards are another popular tool to assist you in securing online data entry projects. In order to filter your search results, you should always use combinations of the following keywords to get targeted results. Keywords such as “online data entry,” “telecommute data entry,” “data entry job,” “data specialist online,” and other pertinent searches will reveal jobs with those titles or keywords, making your search easier.

With patience, persistence, and strong research skills, you can easily land one or several data entry jobs. It is always best to actively research every company you are interested in before sending any information, even if they appear as legitimate.
