Prepare for the Worst to Build Your Affiliate Marketing Empire

by WorkFromHome on July 12, 2011

When you work from home, you want security for your income just like any other job. Once you’re making a good income with affiliate marketing, it can be easy to sit back and stop working as hard since it seems like it will last forever on its own. However, this mindset will get you in a lot of trouble, and can easily be the downfall of your affiliate marketing empire. There are a few specific aspects of your online business that you have to look out for and make sure that you have a backup plan if something goes wrong. Here we’re going to look at what these aspects are and how you can protect yourself from misfortune.

Traffic Source Considerations

You need traffic to be able to achieve much of anything in any online business. If something was to happen to your traffic sources, then you could find yourself in a world of hurt. Because so much of your income relies on getting lots of traffic, you should diversify and try to get traffic from as many sources as possible. If you do affiliate marketing with SEO, then you should target multiple search engines instead of just one. Along similar lines, if you do affiliate marketing with just pay per click advertising, then you should work on getting traffic from more than one advertising agency. If something happens to one of your advertising accounts, or if you’re inexplicably banned from one of the search engines, then you will still be making money while you recover the lost income. If you wanted, you could take this a step further and do both SEO and PPC to get traffic. It will take some extra work, but you have to take appropriate action to protect your business.

Having Backup Monetisation

Just like you can’t sell anything if you don’t have traffic, all of the traffic in the world won’t help you if you can’t monetise it. If you have an offer that is doing really well, you need to realise that it’s not going to last forever, and you should prepare backup monetisation methods. This will usually mean a different affiliate offer from the same program, or a completely different affiliate program altogether.

A good way to manage your campaigns and to prepare backup methods is to build it into your split testing routine. You should always know what the top three offers are that you’ve found so far for each affiliate marketing campaign you have. While you’re testing new ideas, you should keep track of which “losing” offers have performed the closest to your current “winner” so that you know immediately which offers to try if your best offer is no longer available.

The Preparation Mindset

As an affiliate marketer, you’ve got to have some operating capital. In general, this amount should be more than a lot of people keep on hand so that you’ll be prepared for the future if your business takes a hit. There have been countless times an affiliate marketer has hit a winning campaign and stopped working hard, thinking that the money would come rolling in forever. He or she would spend money as fast as it was being made, and when the offer stopped being as profitable or the person’s site dropped in the search engines, the marketer would be stuck without anything to show for his or her efforts.

There’s a saying that can help you stay focused on your preparations: “If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.” Preparing for what will happen if each part of your business fails will help you to recover faster and take fewer losses than your competitors who aren’t working with such a solid foundation. If you stay ready for problems that could happen in advance, then you’ll never get caught with business-threatening problems that you can’t handle.
