Work From Home Benefits & Challenges

by WorkFromHome on May 2, 2011

Working from home has become a popular choice for many people because of the advantages this type of work provides. Some people opt to work as a telecommuter, while others begin home based businesses. Whichever the case, there are several things you must consider before committing to a home based business/career.

Financial Advantages

Operating a business from your home will greatly reduce your start-up costs. Designating a room in your home for office work will not only reduce the need for office space, it will provide you with a legitimate tax deduction.

The cost of office furniture and other supplies will be reduced or eliminated because you can use items from your home. Deposits for electricity and other utilities will be avoided because you are using established accounts in your home. In addition, a portion of all your home expenses can be written off as an office expense.

Perhaps the most important financial advantage is the lower risk involved when beginning the business. Any business in its fledgling stage is at risk for failure. This is enhanced when there are numerous operating expenses. By starting the business in the home, you reduce this risk considerably, creating a better opportunity for success.

Financial Disadvantages

When anyone starts a business there is always a period of time when there is no guaranteed income. Anyone wishing to start a business from home must be prepared financially to endure that short period between start-up and income generation.

Personal Freedom Advantages

When you establish a home based business you are the master of your own destiny. You decide which hours you will work. If you need to take time off to pick the children up from school, you simply do so without repercussion. If you do not wish to work on the weekends, you close up shop those days. Owning your own business can be very beneficial in this way.

Personal Freedom Disadvantages

You must be willing to commit yourself to your business, even though there is yard work to be done or clothes to wash. It is very easy to become distracted when you work from home. You must be willing to set aside time for your chores outside of your work hours, just like when you had a job away from home.

Another problem that can happen is family and friend distractions. All too often when people realize that you work from home people believe they can consume all of your time. There is a misconception that since you are working from home you are free to do whatever – whenever. You will have to put limits on the distractions that you allow.

The last problem that you may face is allowing work to become all-consuming. Many people, especially when they first start a home based business, find themselves working 12 or more hours a day. Work almost becomes an addiction and they cannot step away. This is actually contrary to the reason that you started a home based business, and should be controlled immediately. Set a limit for the amount of hours you are going to work and only break that limit on rare occasion.

One Last Thing To Consider

When you decide to work from home you will often become secluded, at least at first. If you are the type of person who lives for the chit-chat around the cooler every day and the stop-offs after work with co-workers, a home based business may not be for you.
